Our Story

A pledge made. A pledge kept.

The SAGE Scholars Educational Foundation was established in 2018 to work alongside SAGE Scholars, Inc. as an advocate for access to high-quality, affordable private college education. From the beginning, the Foundation has been proactive in developing solutions and funding opportunities for students interested in or already attending member colleges and universities across the nation.

2019

The Pledge & First Essay Contest

The Foundation pledged one million dollars in hard-dollar scholarships over five years. The mission: help families bridge the gap between financial aid and the full cost of tuition, room and board, and additional expenses. The first annual Dr. James B. Johnston Scholarship Essay Contest launched to support this mission.

2020

COVID-19 Emergency Relief

With students navigating the pandemic, the Foundation’s support became more important than ever. In addition to hosting the second annual Essay Contest, the Foundation stepped up with direct COVID-19 Emergency Relief Funds, aiding students who faced financial hardships while attending member colleges and universities.

2021

Record Growth & SAGE Secure

The Foundation celebrated a record number of new member colleges with awards to help first-year students. The third annual Essay Contest was successfully hosted, and the Foundation established the SAGE Secure Scholarship, offering additional student support.

2022

Legend Scholars

The fourth annual Essay Contest highlighted new Legend Scholars awards — special recognitions for visionary leaders who have devoted their lives to promoting the values and affordability of private higher education.

2023

Pledge Fulfilled

The fifth and final Dr. James B. Johnston Scholarship Essay Contest was met with overwhelming support. The Foundation extended its reach through scholarships to consortium member colleges and through the Patrick J. Eiding Scholarships, awarded to deserving students of Philadelphia Federation of Teachers members.
